OSB vs Plywood for Roofing
Roof Sheathing Materials for Roof Installation
Your roof may not seem complicated, but in fact there are many different components that make up a roofing system. You probably know you will have to decide on a type and color of shingle, but did you know you will have to make a decision about roof sheathing, as well? Roof sheathing, also known as decking, is the layer that connects the roof to the house. Attached to the attic trusses, decking covers the rafters and supports the shingles. Generally, when you have a roof installed, you will need to choose between Plywood and OSB. These two similar materials have some key differences, and it pays to understand them when making a choice between these options
OSB vs Plywood
OSB and plywood are both engineered wood, but they are made in different ways. OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is made of wood strands, often from wood that would otherwise be wasted, bound together with resin. Plywood, on the other hand, is made by cross laminating layers of wood veneer, sealing them with a hot press. So, what are the differences in terms of cost and performance?
- OSB costs less than plywood. If your budget is your top concern, OSB may be the way to go, because it is about 40 percent cheaper than plywood.
- Plywood is lighter than OSB. OSB is significantly heavier, which can make a big difference in a roofing project. Using a heavier material means putting more weight on your roof supports.
- OSB is less moisture resistant than plywood. Plywood will become saturated more quickly than OSB, but it also dries much more quickly. Because of the way OSB is made, it will not return to its original shape after swelling with water, and is more susceptible to water damage and decay.
- Plywood is not as environmentally friendly as OSB. OSB is considered a “green” building material, because it is made of wood chips and uses the whole tree. Plywood relies on trees harvested from old-growth forests.
- OSB is not as strong as plywood, and plywood has more longevity. Plywood is stronger and more stable, because it is made with layers that are oriented in opposite directions. This makes it better for holding up larger or steeply sloped roofs. And because of its strength and moisture resistance, plywood typically has a longer lifespan than OSB.
Discussing Options with Your Roofing Contractor
Which material is the right choice for your roof? There is no right answer, and it largely depends on your personal preferences. Talk to your roofing contractor about your particular roof, and you can decide together on the better option.
